Closed Adoption

Montgomery County Closed Adoption Attorneys

Once an adoption takes place, adoption records are typically sealed and the birth parents have no right to contact the child or receive information about the child. Once adoption records are sealed, only a court order can cause those records to be unsealed. This is known as a “closed” or secret adoption.

At the Law Office of Stephen Ross, our attorneys provide compassionate, personalized and experienced representation for clients seeking open, closed and other types of adoptions in Pottstown and throughout southeastern Pennsylvania. We offer flat fees so you will know your adoption costs upfront. Contact us to talk to an adoption lawyer about your case.

What Rights Does the Biological Parent Have After Adoption?

In a closed adoption, the biological mother typically has a choice of whether she wants to see and hold her baby after the birth. However, as a part of the adoption process, the rights of the birth parents are fully and finally terminated. The birth mother has no right to contact the child and cannot obtain information about the child while he or she is growing up. The biological parent also has no obligation to support the child.

The adopted child is issued a new birth certificate that names the adoptive parents as the child's parents. The child's name and even birthplace are typically changed to reflect the surname and location of the adoptive parents. Names and contact information of birth parents, adoptive parents and the child are typically not shared.

Adoptions can also be open, meaning that the birth parents retain some rights to contact with the child and sharing of information.
